September 2011
In August this year some of the Freedom volunteers got dressed up yet again as Pirates ( I actually think they live in these costumes all year around!!) to help raise funds for the Weymouth Carnival. They have received a big thankyou from the Organisers for their efforts and we are waiting to hear how much was raised. The volunteers help out at many local events including the Veterans march and the Folk Festival to name but a few.

Also, the MV Freedom has been accepted onto the Natwest Community Force Project which could mean that if we get enough votes we could receive up to £6,000 towards a refurb or new boat. Voting begins on the 26th September so please, please vote for us I will let you know how in the near future.

August 2011
Over the weekend of September 17th-18th 2011 a barrel roll challenge across Dartmoor will take place for Help for Heroes and MV Freedom.
We are seeking teams to volunteer to undertake this challenge on Saturday 17th with overnight camping facilities available at the River Dart Country Park. The challenge then is to return to Weymouth by whatever means possible ending at the Kings Arms Weymouth on Sunday 18th with a barrel race at 1530hrs, mini beer tent, BBQ, raffle, fantastic local musicians our Mayor is coming along to support us and of course lots of people dressed as Pirates and Smugglers.

If you are interested in taking part please see our website at Dartmoor challenge 4 charity. We are being supported by Dartmoor Brewery, The Kings Arms, The Duke of Cornwall, the Chatsworth Hotel in Weymouth and our fabulous musicians Finian McGurk, Sheryl Lee and last but by no means least the Shanty singers.

If you don't have the energy for the challenge please come down to the Harbourside by the Kings Arms on Sunday 18th from midday onwards to support the local events and get those pirate costumes out!!
July 2011
Eddystone

On the 16th July 2011 Gareth Peaston and his wife Linda sailed from Plymouth to Hand Deep Buoy along (3 miles west of Eddystone Lighthouse) with many other vessels in the 10th Eddystone Pursuit race and back which is a distance of about 26miles. They have done this before and raised an enormous amount for the MV Freedom and kindly offered to do the same agin for us this year.

However the Peastons needed some ballust and guess what? yes you guessed it Tony Hawkins and Julie and Steve Mason crew from the MV Freedom volunteered to be that ballast and sail with them along with Paul a personal friend of Gareth and Lindas, are we mad or what?? See Pictures here

It was extremely rough with strong winds, big waves and rain BUT it was a fantastic day and although we came in 11th place, because of the amount we raised we ended up in 7th place overall and were given an additional £270 by the Organisers.

I believe that the total amount raised was £1825 which is absolutely fantastic

You can find more information about the race at www.eddystonepursuit.org

Finally AN ENORMOUS THANKYOU TO GARETH AND LINDA AND THEIR BOAT WAHINI WAVES
Great Work!

As a result of the hard work of the volunteers with over 500hrs spent working on maintaining the boat the MV Freedom passed her MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) certification first time with absolutely no faults highlighted. That is a feat that cannot be taken for granted!!

Well done and a big thank you to all those that helped out with the hard work and to those that didn't, there is always next year!
Fundraising
A BIG THANK YOU to the soldiers and civilain staff from Weymouths bridging camp for the 6 lifejackets they handed to the MV Freedom in May2011. Royal Engineers, Civil servants and contracted staff came together and took part in various fundraising events with all profits going towards the purchase of some much needed life savingequipment. Charity co-ordinator for the bridging camp Barry Friendship was responsible for arranging everythingand a big thankyou also goes to Major Ian Drummond for allowing his team to take part in the first place.
Without the help of people such as the Bridging Camp Team the MV Freedom wouldn't be able to do what we do for the disabled so THANK YOU ALL.

News March 2011

MV Freedom has been out of the water thanks to Dean & Reddyhoff and Sunseekers who have given their time, use of lifting equipment and space without charge for this work.

We have also been lucky enough to get quite a few volunteers on site to give her a good scubbing down and new antifoul. Below are some pics of the work being carried out.

News December 2010

The fundraising efforts continue in abundance and we are doing really well with continued support from our Freedom Friends and some fantastic new support from various places, in fact too many people and places to name without offending some that may get left out so thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!

We had a great Portland Walk and our first Barrel Roll across Dartmoor which is taking place again next September.

We continue to roam the Dorset countryside fundraising in various degrees of Pirate dress and have gathered some Pirates of Poole along the way, one of whom does a mean impression of Jack Sparrow!

We are well on the way to our vision of having a brand new boat before the Olympics in 2012 which will allow us to cater for more people through a longer season but we still need your support to reach our goal.

Our next event is a fabulous Barn Dance on the 29th January 2011 at Steps in Weymouth, tickets will be on sale soon for £8.00 and we will let you know where you can get yours. A great night out to include some fantastic grub prepared by our very own personal Chef ‘Patrick the Skipper’ so don’t miss it!

Thanks again to everyone that has supported us over the last 12 months and to those that will be in 2011. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Disabled Enjoy Great Day Out

Members of the British Disabled Angling Association (BDAA) and volunteers from the 'MV Freedom' - the only boat on the coast adapted to take wheelchair users on excursions and fishing trips- based in Weymouth, Dorset, came together on August 15th 2010 for a superb day of fishing off Lulworth banks.

The president of the BDAA, Terry Moseley, brought several other members with him and Andy Selby of Weymouth Angling provided the bait, rigs and his expertise.
Several bull huss, wrasse and pouting later, the very weary but satisfied anglers returned to harbour and are planning to do it all again very soon!.
